Common Questions

FAQ

The questions we hear most. If yours isn't here, send it through the inquiry form.

Do you take walk-ins?
Yes, walk-ins are welcome whenever a chair is open. We're open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 6 PM. To guarantee a slot with a specific artist, book through the inquiry form.
How old do I have to be to get a tattoo?
You must be at least 18 years old to receive a tattoo at Iron Heart, with valid government-issued ID. Piercing age policy varies and may require a parent or guardian, so please ask before booking.
How do I book an appointment?
Submit the inquiry form on this site. Pick the artist or piercer whose work fits your idea (or choose 'Not sure who yet' and we'll route it to the shop). They'll reach out directly to confirm details, scheduling, and any deposit.
Do I need to leave a deposit?
Yes, deposits are arranged once your artist or piercer confirms the appointment. The amount and terms depend on the artist and the project.
Where are you located?
Iron Heart Tattoo is at 2815 Beaver Ave, Suite 108, Des Moines, IA 50310, in the Beaverdale neighborhood.
What tattoo styles do you specialize in?
Six independent tattoo artists work at Iron Heart, each with their own style, from American traditional to fine line, illustrative, and beyond. Visit the Artists section to see who fits your idea.
Do you do body piercing?
Yes. Biff and Berkley Lohr are our two body piercers. They handle ears, nostril, septum, lip, navel, and other piercings, and stock high-quality jewelry.
What's your aftercare policy?
You'll receive written aftercare instructions at your appointment. Healing outcomes depend on following them: keep the area clean, moisturized as directed, and out of pools, hot tubs, and direct sun until healed.
How long does an appointment take?
It varies. Small pieces can be an hour; larger custom work may run multiple sessions. Your artist will give you a time estimate during consultation.
Can I bring a reference image?
Absolutely. References help your artist understand what you're after. Include them in your inquiry, or bring them to the consultation. Final designs are your artist's interpretation, not a copy.
